High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Timber framing, or half-timbering, is the method of creating framed structures of heavy timber jointed together with pegged mortise and tenon joints. One of the first people to use the term half-timbered was Mary Martha Sherwood (1775-1851), who employed it in her book The Lady of the Manor, published in several volumes from 1823-1829. Timber framing is the method of creating framed structures of heavy timber jointed together with pegged mortise and tenon joints (lengthening scarf joints and lap joints are also used). Diagonal bracing is used to prevent racking of the structure.

Cabragh House

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Cabragh House is considered an historic site for exemplarising late Victorian furnishings and provincial New Zealand vernacular architecture. The former site of Cabragh House School, now known as Amber House, is pending registration as a New Zealand Historic Place. Cabragh House is a timber house in late Victorian architectural style constructed in Nelson, New Zealand in circa 1897. There are certain constraints imposed by using timber framing as a means of construction and this, together with certain commonalities of style, has meant that many houses constructed of wood during that time, at widely disparate colonial locations throughout the world, share certain similarities. Our article on Victorian architecture has further examples.

Infill

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Infill in its broadest meaning is material that fills in an otherwise unoccupied space. The term is commonly used in association with construction techniques such as wattle and daub, and civil engineering activities such as land reclamation. When a building is constructed in timber framing, the spaces are filled with non-structural material that is known as infill. The earliest type of infill was wattle and daub. Other materials used for the purpose have been lath and plaster, and brickwork (when it is known as nogging). The infill may be covered by other materials, including plaster, weatherboarding or tiles.

This book presents a selection of the best papers from the HEaRT 2015 conference, held in Lisbon, Portugal, which provided a valuable forum for engineers and architects, researchers and educators to exchange views and findings concerning the technological history, construction features and seismic behavior of historical timber-framed walls in the Mediterranean countries. The topics covered are wide ranging and include historical aspects and examples of the use of timber-framed construction systems in response to earthquakes, such as the gaiola system in Portugal and the Bourbon system in southern Italy, interpretation of the response of timber-framed walls to seismic actions based on calculations and experimental tests, assessment of the effectiveness of repair and strengthening techniques, e.g., using aramid fiber wires or sheets, and modelling analyses. In addition, on the basis of case studies, a methodology is presented that is applicable to diagnosis, strengthening and improvement of seismic performance and is compatible with modern theoretical principles and conservation criteria. It is hoped that, by contributing to the knowledge of this construction technique, the book will help to promote conservation of this important component of Europe's architectural heritage.
